Toronto Screeners

TO ALL IAMAW GARDA SCREENERS

The Minister of Transport’s office invited all heads of the Unions, major Companies and Associations working in the Air Transport industry to a Roundtable Session in Ottawa to discuss key issues facing the Canadian Air Transport industry.

Brother Carlos DaCosta, Airline/Transportation Coordinator attended the meeting on June 2A, 2013 to present the issues members are facing who work in this industry. Deputy Minister Denis Lebelwas present to listen and ask questions.

One of the issues presented at this meeting was CATSA’s cut in operational hours for the screeners announced recently in May, 2013, which led to the reductions of screeners and the hours they work. The IAM carefully explained the impact this would put on screeners while they are at work, and on the flying public. We made it clear that there would be:

– longer line ups for passengers due to a drastic reduction in working hours
– the effects it places on screeners by not rotating the job positions to reduce fatigue
– the reduction in meal breaks and
– the fact that washroom breaks would be impacted due to the decrease in manpower”

Clearly this message delivered by the IAM made an impact to those present at the meeting and, when it was delivered to the Minister of Transport.

On July 16, 2013 GARDA called the IAM to a very important meeting to discuss a decision handed down by Transport Canada to CATSA.

GARDA advised us they were RECALLING FORTY (40) PART TIME SCREENERS TO FULL TIME AND RECALLTNG FORTY (40) LA|D OFF SCREENERS BACK TO WORK!

Additionally many more will be hired.
