June Newsletter

Tuesday, June 3, 2014, the day when Ontarian’s sat down and watched as the 3 Ontario Premier candidates duked it out in an all out debate. Answering 6 vital questions brought forth by Ontarian’s. These 6 questions were selected out of 1000 questions brought forth from Ontarian’s.

This election will be the backbone of our livelihoods. For Ontarian’s June 12, 2014, could either cement a change of new founded trust between working class Ontarian’s and their new premier or the continuous scandal of Government corruption and their loyalty to major corporations.

I will be reiterating, what I believe, some of the key points brought forth in the June 3, 2014, debate but please go online, research the candidates, watch the debate, form your opinion and get ready to vote on June 12, 2014.

Question 1: “How can I trust a Liberal government with my retirement money when they squandered a billion dollars on a gas plant scandal and then tried to hide it? How can I trust there will be money left when I’m ready to retire?”

Kathleen Wynne responded by apologizing and seeming to take some responsibility for the gas plant scandal, her repetitive words of “ I have taken responsibility for being part of a Government that made decisions that were wrong.” Suggest that she places blame on her predecessor and her party event though it was her who signed off on the gas plant scandal costing Ontarian taxpayers over $1 billion. No matter how many times Andrea Horwath or Tim Hudak asked Wynne why she made the decision to sign those papers instead of just saying no, she couldn’t muster up anything except an apology. In regard to the Pension plan Wynne says that the Liberal Government is proposing a pension modelled on the CPP. Horwath stated this to be untrue and that the Liberals main concerns are a PRPP (Pooled Registered Pension Plan) scheduled to be introduced in September.

Question 2: “What will your government do to ensure that energy in Ontario remains affordable and regulated in the best interest of the consumer?”

Andrea Horwath responded by saying that there are 4 different agencies and that under the NDP those agencies will be collapsed into 1, cap hydro CEO and public sector wages, and take HST off electricity bills.

Tim Hudak will save $20 billion by stopping any further investments in terms of green energy, he also states he will downsize the bureaucracy.

Kathleen Wynne says that her party has made progress in the Ontario clean benefit but does not actually state how she will lower prices for Ontarian’s.

Question 3: “On the one hand you say you’re going to eliminate 100,000 public service jobs, and in the next breath you say you’re going to have one million new jobs. It doesn’t compute for me—how are you going to do that?”

Hudak used a credit card example stating that if you run up your credit card bill you have less money to spend.

He says that his plan will include the Ontarian’s who will retire and once they have retired another worker will not replace the job. He was even so bold as to say that if his plan does not work that he will resign his position.

The flaw in this premise is that Tim Hudak can’t actually guarantee that workers will in fact retire within his proposed time frame which raises the question, if workers do not retire how many working class jobs will now be on the cutting board?

Wynne responded by saying that she plans to invest in skills, infrastructure and schools and that her Government will partner with businesses and move businesses from traditional to advanced technology.

Horwath says that her government will reward job creators with tax credits.

Question 4: “In order to eliminate the deficit by 2017, with population growth and inflation, we’ll need to make approximately $10 billion in spending cuts. What programs are you planning to cut in order to meet the deficit reduction figures detailed in your party platform?”

Wynne responded by saying that her 3 year plan included the top 2% of earners to pay a bit more.

Hudak said that his government will implement a 2 year wage freeze including politicians and that there will be no wage increase for at least 2 years and that he would reduce his cabinet from 27 to 16 members.

Wynne criticized Tim Hudak’s statement saying that Tim stalled the MPP wage freeze when Liberals tried to implement it.

Horwath says that she will introduce a 1% corporate tax rate.

Question 5: “Do you think that Ontario drivers should have to contribute to the Toronto transit system when Torontonians, who use the transit system, are far better off than someone who has to drive their vehicle to work and has car payments, insurance, gas bills, and wear and tear on their vehicles?”

Horwath responded with saying that there would be a 15% reduction in auto rates (which the liberals promised years ago and still have not completed) investments yearly to roads and highways for 60 km per year.

Wynne states that Liberals would invest 29 billion in roads, bridges and transit. The $29 billion will be divided amongst the GTHA (Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area) $15 billion and outside of that area with $14 billion.

Hudak says he will give local counsel the ability to decide what they want to invest their money in (buses, roads, bridges or subways) He also said he wants to build subways and expand the GO.

Question 6: “What specifically will you do for Ontario’s elementary and high-school students, and to encourage hard-working teachers to remain in their positions and not be afraid for their job security.”

Hudak says he plans to bring in specialty math teachers, eliminate Discovery math (implemented by the Liberals)

Horworth says that she will invest $100 million in stabilizing child care, expand breakfast programs and have schools open on evenings and weekends so that children/teens have a safe environment to shoot hoops and congregate and seniors will be able to use the schools for their clubs.

Wynne says she will invest $150 million for the tools students will need to compete in the 21st century giving students the opportunity to go to post secondary or enter into a skill/trade after high school. She will also implement full day kindergarten.

I implore everyone to exercise their right to vote on June 12, 2014, and make an informed decision on who they want to vote for.
