Face Shields To All Screeners

TO ALL IAMAW MEMBERS GARDA YYZ

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The IAMAW has been fighting for the Health and Safety of Screeners and the fight will continue. The Joint Policy Health and Safety Committee did a workplace risk assessment on March 24, 2020 to look at the workplace and the potential affects of Covid 19. Once we had the results of the risk assessment, Garda and Catsa still refused to provide the proper Personal Protective Equipment as recommended by the joint risk assessment. The IAMAW continued to fight. The IAMAW along with the United Steel Workers made submissions to Transport Canada on behalf of screeners to get the proper personal protective equipment (PPE). On April 17, 2020, CATSA issued an Emergency guidance to provide masks for our front line screeners and the travelling public through our checkpoints. That development was a positive step in the right direction but we feel did not go far enough. Through the IAMAW’s and the United Steel Workers hard work, we are pleased to announce that Garda/CATSA will be providing face shields to all screeners over the coming days, as was recommended by the heath and safety risk assessment back on March 24, 2020.
I would like to thank our Health and Safety Team for all their help through this process and thank all our members for their continued support. I would also like to thank Keith Aiken and Ron Fontaine for their continuous support to our local, Local Lodge 2921. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Stay safe.

Thank you In Solidarity,

Tayeb
